Alea O'Shea's Friends Raise $80K in Brain Cancer Fight

Friends and supporters of actress Alea O'Shea have successfully raised more than $80,000 through a GoFundMe campaign as she continues her courageous battle against brain cancer. The fundraiser, which was established to assist with medical treatments and related costs, has seen donations increase daily, with a current goal set at $90,000 after the initial $80,000 target was reached earlier this week.

Community Support for a Brave Fight

Lauren Newton, the organiser of the fundraising page, highlighted Alea's resilience in facing the disease and its demanding treatments. "Over the past months, Alea has been bravely facing brain cancer and the many treatments that come with it," Newton wrote. "Last week she underwent another surgery as part of her ongoing fight. While her courage has never wavered, the journey has been incredibly challenging for both Alea and her family."

Newton explained that the campaign was created in response to numerous requests from the community seeking ways to help. "This page has been created to give friends, family, and the wider community a way to support Alea by helping ease the financial pressure of medical treatments and related expenses," she added.

Alea's Diagnosis and Public Disclosure

Alea O'Shea, best known for her role as Darcy Callahan on the popular television series Home and Away from 2011 to 2014 and again from 2016 to 2017, first revealed her brain cancer diagnosis in December. Sharing the news with her combined following of 300,000 on social media, she described the preceding weeks as "insane" and expressed her initial shock.

"This is a video I obviously thought I'd never have to make, but I've recently been diagnosed with brain cancer," Alea stated in her announcement. She emphasised her decision to be open about her condition, saying, "I'm choosing to be open and honest about this online, because I want to live my life as normally as possible while I'm fighting this."

Symptoms and Medical Journey

The actress recounted that her symptoms began subtly around six weeks before her diagnosis, with minor changes such as an uneven smile and difficulty speaking. "I noticed that my smile was a little uneven, and it felt harder to talk [and] get my words out," she explained. "I had a few migraines, but nothing scary."

However, the situation escalated rapidly while she was working in Los Angeles, where she experienced loss of feeling in her fingers, wrist, and toe. Initially attributing it to a pinched nerve, Alea consulted a physiotherapist who promptly referred her for a brain scan, leading to the discovery of the cancer.

Reflecting on her experience, Alea now urges others to trust their instincts when their body feels "off" and to seek professional help seriously. "When something feels off even slightly, pay attention to it and find the right professionals who will take you seriously," she advised.

Current Condition and Future Outlook

Despite the diagnosis, Alea remains optimistic and functional, though the left side of her body has been affected. "Can I flip you off? No. Thumbs up? No. Or hold things? No," she joked, adding that the location of the tumour does not impact her personality. "I'm still going to be as hilarious, and have the gift of the gab."

Doctors have warned of potential complications post-surgery, including hair loss and possible paralysis on her left side, but Alea is prepared to adapt. "So, in the coming months, I might be doing videos one handed. I might disappear when I need to, but mostly, I'm going to be showing up as me every single day that I can," she said.

Alea has also documented the hair loss resulting from radiation therapy, sharing her journey openly with followers. She expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support, stating, "To everyone who follows me and has been invested in my journey thus far, regardless, thank you so much for being here. And thank you for staying through this chapter."

A Message of Resilience

In her clips, Alea stressed that her diagnosis does not define her. "It's just another part of my story," she concluded. "And if it can bring some perspective, comfort, or positivity to other people out there going through it, whilst helping me get through it, that's all I could ever want."
