This trend has raised significant concerns among health professionals, as these AI systems may not adequately account for the specific nutritional needs of growing teenagers.

"We show that diet plans generated by AI models tend to substantially underestimate total energy and key nutrient intake when compared to guideline-based plans prepared by a dietitian," explained study author Ayşe Betül Bilen, whose research appears in the journal Frontiers in Nutrition. "Following such unbalanced or overly restrictive meal plans during the teenage years may negatively affect growth, metabolic health, and eating behaviours."

Methodology Reveals Significant Discrepancies

The comprehensive study employed free versions of five prominent AI platforms: ChatGPT 4, Gemini 2.5 Pro, Perplexity, Bing Chat-5GPT, and Claude 4.1. Researchers instructed these systems to create three-day meal plans covering three main meals and two snacks daily for four distinct 15-year-old profiles: a boy and girl in the overweight percentile, and a boy and girl in the obese percentile.

Scientists then conducted detailed comparisons between these AI-generated plans and those meticulously crafted by a specialist dietitian focusing on adolescent health conditions. The findings revealed alarming discrepancies that could have serious clinical implications for teenage users.

Calorie Calculations Fall Dangerously Short

The research team discovered that AI models consistently calculated energy requirements approximately 700 calories lower than the dietitian's recommendations. This substantial shortfall represents the caloric equivalent of an entire meal, creating a deficit large enough to potentially disrupt normal growth patterns and metabolic functions during this critical developmental period.

While the calorie calculations were "severely undercalculated" according to researchers, the analysis revealed additional nutritional imbalances. The AI systems demonstrated a tendency to overcalculate certain macronutrients while underestimating others, creating meal plans that deviate significantly from established nutritional guidelines.

Macronutrient Imbalances Pose Additional Risks

Dr. Bilen warned that "AI-generated diet plans consistently deviated from the recommended macronutrient balance, which is particularly problematic for adolescents." The study found that AI models recommended protein intake approximately 20 grams higher than the dietitian's plans, while carbohydrate content was substantially lower by an average of 115 grams.

This translates to carbohydrates providing only 32-36 percent of total energy in AI-generated plans, compared to the recommended 45-50 percent range. Such imbalances could have significant consequences for energy availability, cognitive function, and physical performance during adolescence.
