A 58-year-old woman from Aberdeen nearly lost her leg after falling asleep in an awkward position following a night of heavy drinking. Trisha Hamilton was rushed to hospital after waking to find her right leg heavily swollen and numb.
Doctors at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary initially feared she might not survive, and later diagnosed her with compartment syndrome, a condition where pressure builds up within the muscles, cutting off blood flow. The wounds became infected, and medics considered amputation before opting to remove the dead skin.
After a three-week hospital stay, Ms Hamilton returned home but has been left with two gaping wounds and no use of her leg. She now relies on a walking aid, wheelchair, and other mobility aids. The pain has shifted to her left leg due to compensating, and she requires strong painkillers.
Ms Hamilton told Aberdeen Live: 'It's been totally life-changing. I'll never manage to go out myself.' She is waiting for a council house with step-free access and a suitable shower. Her partner gave up his home to care for her.
She had never heard of compartment syndrome before her diagnosis and wants to raise awareness. 'I'm glad that I kept my leg. There must be more folk out there like me. I want people to know that this can happen and to take care,' she said.
