The Chase star Shaun Wallace shares knee surgery recovery update

The Chase star Shaun Wallace has spoken about his recent health struggles and his hopes for the future when it comes to his own fitness. Shaun, a barrister turned television star, has spoken about his knee replacement surgery that he had earlier this year, which forced him to delay filming for the ITV game show.

Recovery and discomfort

He addressed his quality of life in an interview with Mr Motivator on his podcast called 'On Your Bike with Mr Motivator'. In the podcast, in which part of the interview is done whilst riding bicycles, Shaun told Mr Motivator, real name Derrick Evans, about his life with sore knees and his aspirations for his recovery, including going back to one activity he loves doing.

Shaun, who has been on The Chase since it began in 2009, but also appeared on BBC's Mastermind in 2004, is one of the most beloved Chasers. He said was still experiencing a little bit of discomfort following his knee replacement surgery.

He told Derrick, after he was asked how he was finding the electric bike: "I've just had a knee replacement surgery, so this is quite good actually, so quite easy."

Later, as the pair sat together on a bench in the sunshine, his health was once again brought up. He said: "It's coming on good. It's still sore. I've got arthritis in both knees."

Running ambitions

The pair then fell into conversation about Shaun's passion for running and what type of runner he was, with Derrick suggesting he appeared to be more of a sprinter, to which Shaun replied: "Long distance runner I was... very good.

"I was built for long distance. I run marathons, half marathons. I used to get up in the morning, put my earpiece in, run around Wembley."

When Derrick asked whether Shaun had been advised by his doctors to undergo the surgery, he replied: "Well, otherwise I would be living a life of discomfort. Who wants that? I don't want that."

On the subject of Shaun's aspirations for his running future, he was questioned about whether it was something he hoped to return to. He explained: "Hopefully, that's the big goal for me.

"I want to have that other knee done as well, and my biggest goal is to put my ear-pods back in ears, go running, listen to A Tribe Called Quest like I used to before."

Previous health concerns

This isn't the first time Shaun has talked about his health, with the man affectionately known as the Dark Destroyer on The Chase admitting around the time of his 65th birthday that he was worried about his future health. Speaking on the New Mind podcast, he expressed his anxiety about potentially inheriting health conditions that affected his parents.

He said: "My mum and dad had health issues, my mum and dad got diabetes, and obviously I could be prone to that.

"But the one thing that I was determined to ensure (was) that by the time I reach, I'm going to reach 65 this year, but by the time I reach into my sort of latter years, you know, tomorrow's not promised to anybody, but I want to be as mobile and independent as I possibly can."
