Susanna Reid explained on Good Morning Britain that her head was 'spinning' when she came into the studio for Wednesday's instalment of the ITV show, attributing the sensation to a long day on Tuesday.
The presenter appeared to be eating moments before the camera cut to her and Ed Balls, as she explained why she was having food during the broadcast. After excusing herself, she told viewers she was having some breakfast, which she does not normally have during the early hours of the programme.
Vertigo admission and lighthearted warning
Susanna explained to viewers that it was 'quite a long day' on Tuesday, and when she is tired, she suffers from vertigo. Giving Ed a lighthearted warning, she told her co-star that if she 'suddenly keels over and collapses' on him, not to be alarmed or offended. Ed quipped that he would support Susanna should that occur, prompting her to laugh and express gratitude, reports the Mirror.
Ed subsequently enquired whether it was he who was causing her dizziness, or Prime Minister Andy Burnham, with whom Susanna had spoken during Tuesday's annual Labour conference. She told him it was neither of them, as they went on to speak about her interview with the Prime Minister.
Kate Garraway's vocal rest
Susanna's vertigo admission comes after another ITV star left the programme midway through the broadcast earlier this month. On September 14, Kate Garraway was reading the news bulletin on the show and addressed her change in voice, which sounded rather hoarse. The presenter apologised to viewers before admitting she was in 'absolutely no pain' and did not feel unwell but had been 'talking too much' the week before.
However, it seems her voice got worse, as Susanna had to explain to ITV viewers that Kate had left the show. She explained: "As you may have noticed earlier this morning, Kate Garraway had a very hoarse voice; she was belting it out at the National Television Awards last week, and her voice has not fully recovered. So, we have put her on vocal rest, and Faye Barker has valiantly come to the rescue and is here with the rest of this morning's news."
Faye Barker steps in
Speaking about the impromptu switch on the programme, Faye commented: "Morning, amazing who you can find in a cupboard at ITN when needed!" Faye Barker is no stranger to the show, as she often presents the news bulletins for ITV London. Speaking about taking over for Kate during the show, Faye said on Instagram: "Rest those vocals @kategarraway Glad to be able to help out! Thanks for the welcome @gmb @susannareid100 @edballs. Back to the cupboard now…."
Earlier on in the programme, Laura Tobin offered some advice to Kate, who was told a plethora of remedies that could help before being told not to talk, which made the ITV presenter laugh as she replied: "Not in my nature, Laura!"
