Spanish TV star Ana Obregón, 68, has clarified that the baby she recently revealed was born via surrogacy in the US is actually her granddaughter, not her daughter. In an interview with ¡Hola! magazine from Miami, she stated, 'This girl isn't my daughter, she's my granddaughter.' The baby was fathered by her son, Aless Lequio, who died of cancer in 2020 at age 27.
Obregón explained that before his death, Aless expressed a wish to have a child, leading to his sperm being frozen and stored in New York. The surrogate mother, reportedly a woman of Cuban origin living in Florida, gave birth to the baby, named Ana Sandra. While surrogacy is illegal in Spain, adopting a child born abroad is lawful.
The revelation has sparked national debate and anger from government ministers. Equality Minister Irene Montero condemned surrogacy as 'a form of violence against women.' However, Obregón dismissed the controversy as 'absurd,' noting that surrogacy is legal in many parts of the world.
Obregón plans to register the baby at the Spanish consulate before returning to Madrid. She has not ruled out providing her granddaughter with a sibling. Legally, she is considered the baby's mother, though biologically she is the grandmother. Ethical concerns have been raised, with commentator Gonzalo Velasco stating, 'No mother or father has the power to interpret the wishes of their child.'
