The Princess of Wales carried out a secret visit to a mental health charity in South-west London last week. Dose of Nature, based in Kew, helps people improve their wellbeing through a combination of clinical psychology and connection with the natural world.
As a passionate advocate for the benefits of nature and being outdoors, Catherine has often spoken about the role that spending time in nature plays in bringing joy and supporting mental, physical and spiritual wellbeing. This latest appearance highlights how vital a role the natural world plays in everyone's lives.
Nature Prescription Programme
The visit forms part of the Princess's longstanding interest in how nature, relationships and preventive approaches can support healthier and happier lives. Founded in 2018, Dose of Nature works with NHS and GP referrals to support individuals experiencing a range of mental health challenges through its clinically led "Nature Prescription" programme.
The charity blends evidence-based psychology, dedicated one-to-one mentorship from volunteer Nature Guides, and immersive outdoor experiences. This approach empowers individuals to rebuild their connection with nature, improve their overall wellbeing, and foster enduring resilience.
Meeting with Programme Participants
Last year, the charity delivered 547 Nature Prescriptions through its hubs in the Boroughs of Richmond and Guildford. During her visit, the Princess spent time with several individuals supported by the charity, including Tom, a former programme participant who has since joined the charity's staff and volunteers as a Nature Guide.
Tom shared how instrumental Dose of Nature was in his personal recovery, helping him cultivate resilience, regain confidence, and rediscover a deep connection with the natural world. During their conversation, Catherine said: "Our journey has been very, very different, but it's so wonderful to hear how your nature connection has been so healing for you, and I felt the same."
The engagement also saw the Princess view the charity's weekly 'Art in Nature' session, where participants use the natural environment as inspiration for creativity, reflection and self-expression.
