Bayern Munich manager Vincent Kompany has confirmed that Jamal Musiala is responding positively after the 23-year-old collapsed in two pre-season matches. Musiala fell to the turf during the Bavarians' match with RB Leipzig on Saturday, August 15, before collapsing again three days later against Heidenheim.
Treatment and diagnosis
Team-mates formed a protective circle around the German international as he received treatment from medical staff, after which he was assisted off the pitch. In the days that followed, Musiala explained that he had been undergoing treatment for "absence seizures caused by a neurological dysfunction," describing the condition as "temporary and easily treatable."
Writing on Instagram, Musiala said: "First things first – I'm doing well. I'm especially grateful for all your messages and your support. I understand that many of you are worried."
Musiala's statement
"Today, I'd like to put your minds at ease and explain the situation a little: I have been diagnosed with brief, temporary but readily treatable absences, which are caused by a neurological dysfunction. These can lead to the episodes that have occurred recently, such as against Leipzig and now in Heidenheim. I know that they may seem scary at first glance – but for me, they are currently part of my everyday life."
He added: "I am receiving the best possible medical treatment for this and I am very optimistic. FC Bayern and the people close to me are always by my side and supporting me on this journey. The important thing is that there is no further health risk beyond this."
Kompany's update
Kompany has now revealed that Musiala is responding positively to treatment and will be brought back into the first-team when ready. "He's getting used to the increase in medication and he's responding well to it," Kompany said. "He'll be back in the squad at some point and he'll play normally again. But of course we'll make that decision hand in hand with all the experts (doctors) and everyone else. But he's fine."
Bayern Munich are set to launch their Bundesliga campaign at home against VfB Stuttgart on Friday evening. Musiala has been ruled out of making an appearance as he continues his recovery.
