Miles Owen's health condition explained as mum shares update

Amanda Owen has shared a family update ahead of her TV return, revealing her son Miles needed emergency hospital treatment for a health episode this summer. The Yorkshire Shepherdess spoke of a "hard few days" after the 19-year-old returned home. Miles, who has type 1 diabetes, said he had been seriously unwell and thanked the NHS staff who cared for him.

Family update after hospital stay

Amanda's caption read: "It's been a hard few days but we're all here to tell the tale. I'm super proud of you @milesowen86." Miles explained he had "been at the hospital, quite poorly the past day or two". Amanda said he had "been a little bit ill, well quite a lot ill actually" and that an ambulance had been needed. She linked the hospital stay to his diabetes but reassured followers that he was home and "feeling much better".

Now, he is back in Our Farm Next Door to help his mum paint the family's farmhouse at Anty John's.

Raising awareness of type 1 diabetes

The family have previously spoken publicly about Miles' health to raise awareness of type 1 diabetes and diabetic ketoacidosis, a potentially life-threatening acute complication. An episode of Reuben Owen: Life in the Dales showed a serious medical emergency involving Miles. The family described the programme on Instagram as "a challenging one", but expressed how "Miles wanted to share what happened to him to hopefully raise awareness". Images showed paramedics giving Miles a drip, then carrying him on a stretcher to an air ambulance.

The narrator in the episode explained how he suddenly became "gravely ill", detailing: "Miles had developed DKA, diabetic ketoacidosis, a life-threatening condition where a lack of insulin creates dangerous levels of ketones in the blood."

Dad Clive's account and the renovation project

His dad, Clive, had said at the time: "I think, probably one of the worst days of my life, I think you could safely say. Scary day." He recounted the moment he found his son, saying: "He (Miles) was laid out on the stairs, halfway down the stairs, couldn't stand. His head was back, and he was struggling to breathe. You could see there was something majorly wrong here. So, panic stations."

Away from his hospital stays, Miles works full-time as a farmer and helps his parents renovate their dilapidated 200-year-old farmhouse at Anty John's. The project features in Our Farm Next Door: Amanda, Clive and the Kids, which follows Amanda, Clive and their family as the restoration progresses. The opening episode sees snow turn Ravenseat into a winter playground for the younger children while Miles helps his mother with the building work.

Our Farm Next Door: Amanda, Clive and the Kids airs on More4 on October 5 at 9pm.
