Miles Owen, the 19-year-old son of Yorkshire Shepherdess Amanda Owen, has Type 1 diabetes, a condition that can lead to diabetic ketoacidosis, a potentially life-threatening acute complication. He has been rushed to hospital on several occasions after suffering serious health scares.
Miles is currently helping his mother with renovations at their new family home, Anty John's, as featured in the new series Our Farm Next Door: Amanda, Clive and the Kids. The show, which airs on More4, documents the family's busy lives as they restore the farmhouse.
Air ambulance rescue in 2022
In December 2022, Miles suffered a major medical emergency on the farm. Footage of the incident was later shown in an episode of Reuben Owen: Life in the Dales.
Photos showed paramedics placing Miles on a drip before carrying him on a stretcher to an air ambulance. The family shared the footage on Instagram in June 2025, with a caption reading: "It has taken until now to share what happened in December 2022 when there was a big medical emergency on the farm. Miles @milesowen86 wanted to share what happened to him to hopefully raise awareness of Type 1 diabetes and Diabetic ketoacidosis, which is a potentially life-threatening acute complication."
The caption added: "Do tune in at 8pm on Channel 5 for an uplifting glimpse of how in difficult circumstances and locations individuals can change the narrative of a story and save lives."
One follower commented: "Thank you for talking about it. Our son was diagnosed over a year ago and we have just watched this episode tonight. It’s so important for representation- and especially for a farming mad 7 year old in the Dales x"
Another hospital stay in 2025
In June this year, Amanda and Miles shared another health episode on Instagram. Amanda wrote in the caption: "It’s been a hard few days but we’re all here to tell the tale. I’m super proud of you @milesowen86."
In a video, Amanda said: "Look who I've got here," as she pointed to her son. "He's been away, haven't you Miles?" Miles explained: "Yeah, I've been at the hospital, quite poorly the past day or two."
Amanda went on to explain that he had "been a little bit ill, well quite a lot ill actually", sharing how he had needed an ambulance. She revealed the incident was related to her son's diabetes, but she was glad he was back home and "feeling much better".
"You are feeling better, you are looking better," Amanda observed. "And the people, weren't they amazing?" Miles said he could not thank the NHS staff enough and was "glad to be back". "I'm happy to say everyone is safe and sound, and I'm really proud of you," she concluded.
Grateful to air ambulance crew
Following the 2025 incident, Miles had to be airlifted to James Cook Hospital from the Yorkshire Dales farm, a two-hour drive away. Reunited with the air ambulance service crew, Amanda fought back tears as she thanked them.
Speaking to Miles, the paramedic said: "With the rural nature of where you live, things could have been very different for you. It could have been a different outcome."
Our Farm Next Door: Amanda, Clive and the Kids airs on More4 on October 5 at 9pm.
