Michael Douglas on mental health after Davina McCall's cancer

Davina McCall's husband Michael Douglas, 52, has candidly discussed his mental health battles on the couple's joint podcast, Making the Cut. The celebrity hairstylist disclosed he'd undergone a blood test to examine his testosterone levels, which naturally decline as men get older, after recognising he was feeling "lethargic" and "a bit low recently".

Struggles during tough year

The NHS explains that some men experience depression, reduced sex drive, erectile dysfunction, and other physical and emotional symptoms when they reach their late 40s to early 50s.

Michael told listeners that the challenges of the previous year had affected him deeply. In 2025, ITV's Long Lost Family host Davina was diagnosed with breast cancer, shortly after recovering from emergency surgery to remove a "very rare" brain tumour.

He confessed: "The back end of last year [I] was very down, very, very low. Of course, far as to say, the lowest I've ever felt."

Davina responded: "What do you think happened?" To which Michael elaborated: "It was a mixture of things going on. You know, I had some kind of emotional family stuff, you know, that was weighing me down a little bit. Business was quite tough last year."

"You know, I was carrying, shouldering, a lot of responsibility. We had a very tough year. Yeah, you had breast cancer."

Memory difficulties

Davina then interrupted to acknowledge that her brain surgery had left a lasting effect on her memory, which was "hard" for Michael to handle. She continued: "And also my memory was really difficult and that was very difficult. I couldn't remember, I couldn't remember, but it was hard on you, I know that."

Davina questioned her husband about whether he'd been battling clinical depression, but Michael explained that he felt more like he simply "had problems that needed solving".

The Masked Singer judge was swift to commend her partner, whom she wed last December, saying: "I really admire you," before recognising that the couple had endured a "dark" period due to her health struggles, with Michael concurring: "It was b****y heavy".

Future plans

The heartfelt conversation follows Michael's revelation to The Mail on Sunday that former Big Brother presenter Davina, who is now cancer-free, has made arrangements to step back from her hectic TV schedule in five years' time.

He said: "We've got five years of hard work left in us. Then I think it's time for us to relax and enjoy all of that hard work. Davina will be about 62 and I'll be around 58."

Davina McCall is appearing on Long Lost Family: Born Without Trace on Monday August 3 from 9pm on ITV1 and ITVX.
