The Office star Lucy Davis has said she is "overwhelmed" by the support she has received since revealing her incurable cancer diagnosis. The actress, best known for playing Dawn Tinsley in the sitcom, shared an update on Instagram to thank fans for their kindness.
Cancer diagnosis revealed
Davis, 53, announced earlier this week that her cancer has metastasized to her bones, 18 months after her initial diagnosis. In her update, she described the response as "overwhelming" and said she was "in shock" at the attention her post received.
She wrote: "Ok, so the last two days have been utterly overwhelming, in that I had ZERO idea my cancer post would have the attention it did. Truly, I am in shock. That said…. THANK YOU to everyone for the tremendous amount of kindness and support you have sent me."
Fans send love
Davis accompanied the message with a video of her attempting to skateboard, joking about her lack of sporting ability. Fans responded with supportive comments, with one writing: "You are just the best! Sending so much love your way!" Another said: "Lucy I hope your heart is absorbing all the LOVE coming your way beautiful girl."
In her initial statement on August 11, Davis shared details of her diagnosis, saying she was diagnosed with Stage 4 breast cancer a year and a half ago, which has spread to her spine, right hip, and ribs. She said the cancer is incurable and too late for chemotherapy.
Living with humour
Davis urged others not to ignore unusual symptoms, saying she almost didn't get a "tiny" hard spot checked. She said she is trying to live her life "in as fun a way as I possibly can" and that humour has been vital to her.
She added that she is "at peace" with what comes next and plans to continue her work for animal rights and acting, which she called "one of the biggest joys in my life."
