As winter approaches and energy costs rise, medical professionals are cautioning against turning off heating entirely, warning that a cold home could trigger heart disease and other serious health complications.
From October 1, the energy price cap increased by 4%, meaning the average household now faces an estimated annual bill of £1,723 — £60 more than under the previous cap. In a bid to cut costs, many people may consider switching the heating off and reaching for an extra jumper, but experts say this could be a serious error.
Health risks of a cold home
The elderly and those with underlying health conditions are especially susceptible to the cold. The NHS advises that staying warm throughout the winter months can help ward off serious health concerns, including heart attacks, strokes and pneumonia. It recommends maintaining frequently used rooms at approximately 18°C or higher where possible, particularly for those living with health conditions.
Dr Asiya Maula, private GP at The Health Suite, said: "When money is tight, turning the heating down can feel like an obvious way to save, but for some people a cold home can have real health consequences."
Vulnerable groups urged to stay warm
Dr Maula emphasised the importance of warmth for older people and those with long-term conditions. She said: "This is particularly important for older people and anyone living with a heart, lung or other long-term condition."
"Someone who already has asthma, COPD, heart disease or another chronic condition may be more vulnerable to the effects of the cold," she added. "If you notice that you are constantly cold, unusually tired, becoming breathless or struggling to manage a condition that is normally stable, do not simply assume it is because of the weather."
Checking on neighbours and seeking help
Dr Maula advised that if you have elderly relatives or friends, it's worth making a point of checking in on them during the winter period. She said: "For older relatives or neighbours, a quick phone call or visit can also make a difference. Someone may be quietly sitting in a cold home because they are worried about the cost of turning the heating on."
If you're finding it difficult to keep your home adequately heated, ensure you check whether you're entitled to any financial assistance.
