Earth, Wind and Fire drummer John Paris, 58, has been placed in a medically induced coma after suffering a cardiac incident hours before the band was due to perform with Lionel Richie in California.
The band, known for hits including "September," had been on tour and recently performed at the Electric Paradise festival in Milton Keynes. According to TMZ, Paris suffered the incident just before the scheduled gig.
Critical Condition and Hospitalisation
Paris was quickly taken to hospital and described by the San Francisco Fire Department as being in a critical condition. Shelly White, wife of bandmate Verdine White, posted an update on Facebook on Thursday (August 13), saying Paris was unconscious but briefly regained consciousness.
White noted that tour manager Toshi was supporting Paris, commending her for her "steady presence, care, and support." Paris was then placed in an induced coma for immediate treatment.
Brief Awakening and Setback
His family stayed with him for several days as he received care. Paris suddenly awoke and looked around the room, asking where his wife Kathy was. He quipped: "Get me outta here man!"
The moment lasted only seconds before his blood pressure spiked and he struggled to breathe. Doctors put him under again to stabilise his body.
Ongoing Fight and Hope
White insisted Paris is still with them, noting he shows slight responses when he hears music. She added: "John’s journey is far from over, there is so much hope that surrounds him."
She pleaded with fans to pray for Paris and his family, saying: "Your kindness, your encouragement, and your unwavering support continue to lift this family during the most difficult days of their lives."
