Doctors are worried about an apparent risk with Donald Trump's health. The President of the United States has reportedly gained 23 pounds (about 1.64 stone) since the 2024 election campaign. This is based on records from August 2023, when he was charged in Georgia in an election interference case. His weight was then listed as 215 pounds (15.35 stone). But in May this year, a White House medical report stated that he weighed 238 pounds (17 stone).
BMI Classified as Overweight
This would put him only 1.6 pounds (0.11 stone) from being classified as "obese". According to the NHS' BMI calculator, Mr Trump's BMI is 29.7 - which is classed as "overweight". The NHS states: "An overweight result suggests you could benefit from making some healthy changes. If you want to lose some weight, working towards a healthier weight range could reduce the risk of long-term conditions such as type 2 diabetes and heart disease."
As regards next steps, the NHS suggests: "BMI is just one way to measure health. It cannot tell you if you're carrying too much fat, or if you've got lots of muscle. Check your waist to height ratio to find out if you're carrying too much fat around your tummy."
Doctors Urge Weight Loss
The Washington Post reports that White House doctors have urged the President to lose weight by improving his diet and doing sustained physical activity.
"We know that obesity is a strong risk factor for numerous health issues - as well as premature disability and death," said Scott Kahan, the director for the National Center for Weight and Wellness, and a George Washington University physician, according to the newspaper. "Addressing obesity to protect the president's health should be a priority similar to ensuring Secret Service protections for his life."
"BMI is a great screening tool, but it's not everything," said Gitanjali Srivastava, an obesity specialist. She added that weight could be a secondary issue compared to other markers of health. Srivastava said: "At that age, it's less about a number, but more about, what is the percent body fat? What are we trying to improve including overall health, function, body fat?"
President's Physician Reports Excellent Health
Trump's physician, Captain Sean Barbabella, said in May: "President Trump remains in excellent health, demonstrating strong cardiac, pulmonary, neurological, and overall physical function. His demanding daily schedule, including multiple high-level meetings, public engagements, and regular physical activity, continues to support his overall well-being. Cognitive and physical performance are excellent. He is fully fit to carry out all duties of the Commander-in-Chief and Head of State."
