Michael Douglas, husband of TV presenter Davina McCall, has spoken candidly about his mental health struggles on their joint podcast, Making the Cut. The 52-year-old celebrity hairstylist revealed he had been feeling "lethargic" and "a bit low recently", leading him to have a blood test to check his testosterone levels, which naturally decline as men age.
Health battles take a toll
In 2025, Davina was diagnosed with breast cancer, shortly after recovering from emergency surgery to remove a "very rare" brain tumour. Michael admitted that the difficulties of the previous year had left him feeling "very, very low", describing it as "the lowest I've ever felt".
During the podcast, Davina asked what she thought had caused his low mood. Michael explained it was "a mixture of things going on", including emotional family issues, a tough year for business, and shouldering a lot of responsibility. He added, "We had a very tough year. Yeah, you had breast cancer."
Memory struggles and support
Davina interjected to admit that her brain surgery had a lasting impact on her memory, which was "hard" for Michael to cope with. She said, "I couldn't remember, but it was hard on you, I know that."
When asked if he had suffered from clinical depression, Michael clarified that he felt more like he "had problems that needed solving". Davina praised her husband, whom she married last December, saying, "I really admire you," and acknowledged the "dark" time they had been through. Michael agreed, calling it "b****y heavy".
Retirement plans
Earlier, Michael told The Mail on Sunday that Davina, who is now cancer-free, plans to retire from her TV career in five years. He said, "We've got five years of hard work left in us. Then I think it's time for us to relax and enjoy all of that hard work. Davina will be about 62 and I'll be around 58."
Davina McCall appears on Long Lost Family: Born Without Trace on Monday August 3 from 9pm on ITV1 and ITVX.
