Former Manchester United midfielder Christian Eriksen is "conscious and doing well" after collapsing on the pitch during a friendly match against Ukraine on Sunday evening. The 34-year-old Danish international fell to the ground holding his chest in the 65th minute at Nature Energy Park, prompting an immediate response from medical staff and players.
Match Called Off
Broadcast cameras quickly moved away from the scene as medics rushed to Eriksen's aid. The referee halted play and subsequently called off the match, which Denmark was leading 2-1 at the time.
The Danish Football Union (DFU) released a statement confirming Eriksen's condition: "Christian Eriksen is conscious and doing well under the circumstances. The match has been called off."
Medical Update
Danish team doctor Morten Boesen, who also attended to Eriksen during his collapse at Euro 2020, provided further details. "Christian is doing well and walked off the pitch by himself. As I see it, the pacemaker responded as it should," Boesen said in a statement via DBU.
"He was briefly unconscious but regained consciousness very quickly and we were quickly in contact with him. He will now undergo further examinations at the hospital to determine what caused the incident. We are in ongoing contact with him and the doctors at the hospital. But Christian is doing well and he asked me to send his regards to all the players and tell them that he was okay."
Previous Cardiac Incident
In 2020, Eriksen collapsed during a 1-0 loss to Finland in Euro 2020, later revealed to be a cardiac arrest. He required cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on the pitch and subsequently had an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) fitted. This device monitors heart rhythm and delivers shocks if needed.
At the time, he was contracted to Inter Milan, but Serie A rules prohibited players with pacemakers. He resumed his career at Brentford in 2022 before a three-year spell at Manchester United. Last summer, he joined Wolfsburg.
Sunday's incident sparked renewed fears, but the positive update from DFU has reassured fans and the football community.
