Netflix star Chase Stokes has revealed that he suffered from multiple organ failure after he finished filming Outer Banks.
The 33-year-old, who played John B in the TV series, appeared in the show from its premiere in 2020 to when its final scenes were filmed in December 2025.
Health issues after filming
The actor has now revealed that two of his organs started to fail after he filmed the fifth and final season. Stokes said he had a number of health issues, including with his "out of whack" brain, which were so bad that he "wouldn't have been around much longer" if he didn't take a step back.
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, he said: "I left that show … my liver was failing, my kidney was failing. I had so many health issues that I had to figure out, and my brain was all out of whack. It was a really important time for me to get my bearings right versus just go back into work and mask it."
Treatment and recovery
His health issues included "alarmingly low" levels of testosterone, which prompted him to get twice monthly blood tests and start transcranial magnetic stimulation therapy (TMS), which he described as "deep" and "intensive". TMS is a non-invasive procedure where magnetic fields are used to stimulate parts of the brain. It is often used to treat mental health conditions and neurological disorders.
Stokes added that without taking time to "take care of my body", he "unfortunately wouldn't have been around much longer". He said he had "a lot to live for" and more he wanted to accomplish. He remarked that it was "unfortunate" how many "great people" had suffered by not seeking treatment sooner. He said he was feeling a lot better after getting help.
Dealing with fame
Elsewhere in the interview, Stokes said he had a "really hard time" coming to terms with his level of fame after being in Outer Banks. The teen drama follows the tension between the working class locals and the much wealthier season residents of Outer Banks, North Carolina as kids from both groups go searching for lost treasure. Stokes' John B is the main character, who hunts for gold after his father goes missing.
He told The Hollywood Reporter how difficult he found just going for a walk with his dog, as people would start taking photos of him without his permission. He added that he never thought he would be part of something so big and, despite the downsides of fame, was grateful that he got to be in the show.
As well as being in Outer Banks, Stokes played Peris in a 2024 adaptation of dystopian novel Uglies, starring alongside Joey King. He was also in 2021 series Tell Me Your Secrets.
