Bake Off winner Georgie Grasso reveals bipolar 2 and autism

Georgie Grasso, the first Welsh winner of The Great British Bake Off, has revealed she has been diagnosed with bipolar 2 and autism, a change from her previous ADHD diagnosis. The baker, who now works as a full-time influencer, said the news came as a shock and left her feeling scared.

Diagnosis revealed on Instagram

In a post to her 197,000 Instagram followers, Grasso wrote: "Turns out... I don't have ADHD. I have Bipolar 2 + Autism." She explained that her doctor had mentioned the possibility the year before, but she had thought "there's no way".

Grasso, who previously worked as a nurse in Carmarthen, said she had spent years researching ADHD but "knew nothing" about bipolar disorder. She added that the diagnosis made some parts of her life "make more sense", including why she had struggled to keep down a job.

Impact and next steps

Grasso said she felt scared about being judged but also felt "a bit of relief". She expressed hope that new medication would help her become "stable" and more consistent with her work, despite worrying about side effects.

She urged followers with bipolar disorder to share advice and asked people to "stick around", saying "I need you more than ever".

Bipolar 2 is a lifelong mental health condition marked by shifts between high and low moods, with milder hypomanic episodes and severe depression, according to Bipolar UK. Approximately two in five people with bipolar have type 2.
