Colleagues Loathe Me
A reader writes that her boss and lover is generous, but she feels obliged to repay him with sex. He's married and won't leave his wife. For her birthday, he gave a diamond bracelet and sexy underwear, and booked a fancy hotel where she was expected to pleasure him. They had champagne and used a jumbo packet of condoms. She doesn't fancy him but likes his money. All her colleagues hate her, and she feels bad about herself.
Jane says everything has its price, and if the price is sex with a man who isn't available and she doesn't fancy, she's in danger of selling out. She suspects the reader is flattered, but it's tacky. Colleagues are likely laughing behind her back. She warns that when the wife finds receipts or credit card bills, she'll go nuclear. Jane advises sorting out a new job before it all goes belly up.
Sudden Death
Another reader says his wife isn't interested in seeing friends or family, wants to give up her job, and downsize to the country. She used to be vibrant and a highflyer, but it feels like she's given up. Their kids are traveling the world, and she never recovered from her dad's sudden death in 2023. He suspects she's lost confidence and sees nothing to look forward to.
Jane encourages the husband to get his wife to talk about her thoughts and desires. They should plan the next stage together, including treats and challenges. She should be congratulated for raising confident, ambitious kids. If she's anxious, stressed, or has physical ailments, she should visit her GP, and mention her grief. This is a period of transition, but with imagination and planning, there will be light and life ahead.
