Police have launched an urgent search for a mother and her newborn baby who disappeared after their car broke down on the M61 near Bolton. Constance Marten and Mark Gordon were travelling on the motorway when their vehicle caught fire near junction four on Thursday evening.
Officers believe Constance had given birth 'very recently' and that neither she nor the baby have been seen by medical professionals. The couple and their infant are thought to have left the motorway safely and were last seen walking on Anchor Lane Bridge, which links Highfield and Little Hulton, at around 6:30pm.
Chief Superintendent Michaela Kerr issued a direct plea to Constance, saying: 'As a mum, I would like to make a direct appeal to you. I know this is an exceptionally hard time and you are likely feeling scared, but I promise that our number one priority is the same as yours - to keep your beautiful newborn safe.' She urged the mother to contact emergency services or go to the nearest hospital.
Mark was last seen wearing dark clothing, while Constance, who has a southern accent, was wearing a burgundy coat. Police are increasingly concerned for their welfare and have asked anyone with information to call 999 immediately, quoting reference 2657 05/01/23.
