Sam Thompson accompanied his sister Louise to Parliament on Wednesday to discuss her harrowing birth trauma ordeal. Louise, 35, nearly died in 2021 while giving birth to her son Leo-Hunter, requiring an emergency caesarean and losing 12.5 litres of blood. She later suffered from PTSD and postnatal anxiety, and has since been diagnosed with Lupus and Asherman's syndrome, in addition to experiencing a second haemorrhage and needing a stoma bag.
During the meeting with the Birth Trauma APPG, which raises awareness of physical and psychological harm from childbirth, Louise candidly spoke about her emotional trauma. Sam discussed the impact on himself and close family members. They were photographed alongside Theo Clarke, founder of the Global Birth Trauma Alliance and former Chair of the UK's Birth Trauma Inquiry.
The visit follows Louise's earlier revelation of a miscarriage over a year ago, which she shared in her book 'Lucky', released in April. She described writing the book as 'cathartic' and said sharing her story felt 'quite liberating'. In an Instagram post, she explained she had only told a handful of people about the miscarriage but wanted to address it openly to avoid speculation.
