A 22-year-old woman from Airdrie has admitted faking a pregnancy for 21 months, duping friends and family into believing a Reborn doll was her real baby. Kira Cousins confessed in a series of social media posts on Tuesday, saying, 'I wasn't pregnant. There was no baby. I made it up and kept it going way too far.'
Cousins wore a prosthetic bump for months before pretending to give birth alone on October 10, claiming her 'daughter' Bonnie-Leigh Joyce weighed 5lbs 4oz. She posted fake scan images, videos of a gender reveal party, and even claimed antenatal tests had detected a heart defect. Loved ones bought expensive gifts, including a £1,000 pram.
The hoax unravelled when the baby's father discovered the doll, and Cousins's mother found the prop in her bedroom. In messages, Cousins allegedly told the father that the baby had died. Friend Neave McRobert said suspicions grew when no one heard the 'baby' cry, and Cousins refused to let anyone touch her.
Cousins apologised in a deleted Instagram story, saying, 'I know how bad it is, I f****d up. I just didn't know how to stop once I started.' She added, 'I wasn't in a good headspace, but that doesn't make what I did okay.' She said she would explain her actions on an Instagram live.
