Noah, a Hebrew name meaning 'rest or repose', and Olivia, a Latin name meaning 'olive tree' popularised by Shakespeare, are the top choices for boys and girls in Scotland and the rest of Britain. In Northern Ireland, James and Grace are the most common, while the Republic of Ireland favours Jack and Emily. France has selected Leo and Jade as its leading names.
The map highlights a strong trend towards religious names across Europe, with variations of Maria, Marie, and Mia—all derived from the Hebrew Miryam—being the most popular in 17 countries. Researchers suggest that parents may opt for well-known names to avoid characteristics like age and social background that could lead to discrimination.
Experts note that familiar, easily pronounceable names are often perceived as more likeable and trustworthy. However, Adam Alter, a psychology professor at New York University, argues that unique names can foster unconventional thinking. 'It’s a self-fulfilling prophecy that begins with an unusual name and ultimately leads to unconventional or creative thinking,' he said.
