A father has expressed outrage after his parents secretly took his nine-month-old daughter to have her ears pierced without his or his wife's consent. The couple had previously decided to wait until their daughter, referred to as Thalia for privacy, was old enough to make the decision herself.
The unnamed man explained on Reddit that his parents ignored the parents' wishes and arranged for a friend to pierce the baby's ears while babysitting. The father wrote: 'I was never into the idea of it being done as a baby when they can't consent... When they babysat for us once they got one of my mum's friends to do it and we were f***ing p***ed they went behind our backs.'
As a result, the couple have banned the grandparents from unsupervised visits, allowing only supervised contact. This decision has caused family conflict, with relatives accusing the parents of overreacting. The father said: 'That's where everyone is still saying we're being massive a**holes because we're still punishing them over something that's not a big deal.'
Reddit users largely supported the parents, arguing that the grandparents had 'permanently damaged' the child's body without consent. One commenter noted: 'They permanently damaged their granddaughter's ears to put jewellery in, which can cause an infection and possibly kill the child if it was not done with sterile gear.' Another added: 'It's about the blatant disregard for the parents' wishes.'
