A 19-year-old pregnant woman from Merthyr Tydfil says she has been forced to move out of her flat due to a severe black mould problem that she claims has been ignored for two years. Jess Marsh, who is expecting a second child, says the mould has spread to every room, damaging furniture, carpets, and her daughter's toys.
Ms Marsh first noticed mould two years ago but says it has become unbearable. She claims repeated requests to Hafod Housing Association, which manages the property, resulted in little action until this week, when an inspection was scheduled for December 2. She fears repairs may not be completed until after Christmas.
Ms Marsh and her two-year-old daughter have moved back in with her mother, as the toddler experiences coughing and choking when in the flat. “I can’t have my daughter in there now because as soon as she goes in, she chokes and can’t stop coughing,” she said.
Hafod Housing Association stated: “Our customers’ wellbeing and safety is of highest importance… We have already instructed a specialist contractor to inspect and assess the condition of the property… Following this, any recommended works will be completed.”
According to the NHS, mould and damp are caused by excess moisture, often from leaks or condensation. Symptoms can include sneezing, throat irritation, and asthma triggers.
