Three teenagers have died in Queensland after their car crashed into a dual-cab ute while attempting to overtake a truck. The incident occurred late on Friday night in Mackay, more than 800km north of Brisbane.
Two 19-year-old men and a 19-year-old woman died at the scene. Police said the teens had attempted to overtake a semi-trailer travelling in the same direction while heading south on the Mackay Ring Road near Glenella.
They collided with a Great Wall Cannon ute travelling in the opposite direction, driven by a 29-year-old man. Emergency services were called just after 10.40pm, and the man was taken to hospital in a serious condition.
An Isuzu D-Max veered off the road to avoid the crash, but its occupants were not injured. The semi-trailer driver, aged 68, was also uninjured. Queensland police said the Mackay forensic crash unit is investigating the collision.
