A close-knit Queensland community has been shattered following a horrific single-vehicle crash that claimed the life of a young man and left two others in a critical condition.
The tragedy unfolded on the Bruce Highway at Mount Ossa, approximately 80 kilometres north of Mackay, on Tuesday night. Emergency services were dispatched to the scene after reports a utility vehicle had left the road and crashed.
Despite the desperate efforts of paramedics, the driver and sole occupant of the vehicle, a 19-year-old man, succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
Two Survivors Fight for Their Lives
Two male passengers, aged 18 and 20, were miraculously freed from the wreckage by emergency crews. Both sustained serious, life-threatening injuries and were initially transported to the Mackay Base Hospital for urgent treatment.
In a critical care response, the two survivors were later airlifted to the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital. They remain under intensive care as medical teams work to stabilise them.
Police Investigation Underway
The Forensic Crash Unit has launched a full investigation to determine the exact circumstances that led to the devastating accident. Police are appealing for any witnesses, particularly anyone who may have dashcam footage of the vehicle travelling along the Bruce Highway prior to the crash, to come forward.
