A Greater Manchester teacher fighting for her life in a Dubai hospital after losing her baby has woken from a coma, but remains 'extremely poorly', her family has said.
Zoey Campbell-Lowndes, understood to be from Prestwich, was 30 weeks pregnant when she and partner Kevin got the tragic news that their baby boy had passed away. After undergoing a Cesarean section to deliver the baby, Zoey's health deteriorated 'significantly', her loved ones said. She was transferred to the intensive care unit of a hospital in the city.
Medical bills exceed £100,000
Birth plan insurance covered the baby, but not medical emergencies involving Zoey, her family said. Her medical bills had already passed £100,000 as they launched an appeal for help.
In an update, Zoey's loved ones said she is now out of a medically induced coma but 'remains extremely poorly' and faces a further bill of more than £50,000 for the treatment she needs.
Urgent need for Eculizumab
"Her blood levels are still not improving as well as the doctors had hoped, and she now urgently requires further specialist treatment," a GoFundMe statement reads.
"The doctors have advised that Zoey needs a medication called Eculizumab, which costs an incredible £14,000 per dose. She requires a minimum of four doses, potentially increasing to six. This means we are now facing a further £56,000 in medication costs alone, on top of the money already spent and the ongoing hospital and treatment costs that continue to build."
"We are doing everything we possibly can to get Zoey the treatment she needs. If anyone has any contacts, knowledge or ability to help us source Eculizumab elsewhere at a reduced cost, please get in touch with us. Any help or advice would mean so much."
Family's appeal for support
"We never imagined finding ourselves in this position, but we are desperate to give Zoey every possible chance of recovery. Please continue to donate and share Zoey's story. Every contribution, no matter how small, genuinely makes a difference. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for continuing to stand by Zoey and our family. Please keep her in your thoughts and prayers."
The initial family statement on the page last month said: "What should have been a time of excitement and preparation for welcoming her little boy into the world has instead become an unimaginable tragedy. While our family is trying to come to terms with the heartbreaking loss of Zoey's baby boy, we are also facing the terrifying reality of not knowing what will happen next. All we want is for Zoey to receive the medical care she desperately needs and to have every possible chance of recovery."
