A patient has been charged with murder following the fatal stabbing of a nurse at a mental health facility in south London. The incident occurred at Southleigh community hospital in Croydon on Thursday afternoon.
The victim, a medic in his 60s, suffered multiple knife wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene. Police have not yet formally identified him. A 40-year-old man, believed to be a patient at the facility, was arrested on suspicion of murder and is being treated at another hospital for a hand injury.
Detectives from the Metropolitan Police are investigating the circumstances. A spokesman said: 'We retain an open mind relating to the circumstances surrounding the incident.' A postmortem examination is scheduled for Saturday at Croydon mortuary.
Southleigh community hospital provides treatment and rehabilitation for adults with long-term mental health problems. A hospital spokesman expressed deep sadness, adding: 'He was a valued and respected member of staff who will be deeply missed.'
