A former school friend of convicted baby killer Lucy Letby has disclosed that the nurse attended her wedding while on police bail. The revelation comes in a new ITV documentary titled 'Lucy Letby: Beyond Reasonable Doubt?'. Letby was initially arrested in July 2018 on suspicion of murdering eight infants and was later convicted of murdering seven babies and attempting to murder seven others.
Dawn Howe, who attended Aylestone Secondary School in Hereford with Letby, shared photographs from her wedding, which took place while Cheshire Police were investigating the neonatal nurse. In one image, Letby is seen smiling and dancing in a red blouse and grey skirt. Another shows Howe walking past Letby, who is tossing confetti. Howe said Letby had to obtain special permission from the police to attend.
Reflecting on the shock of her friend's arrest, Howe said: 'I watched it all unfold every step of the way. I just couldn't believe it. It was beyond belief that this could be happening.' She recalled that Letby was the only one in their circle with a clear career ambition, aspiring to become a nurse and care for very ill babies.
Since September, the Thirlwall Inquiry has been examining how Letby was able to murder or attack 14 babies at the Countess of Chester Hospital. Despite losing two appeals against her convictions, Letby's legal team has presented new evidence to the Criminal Cases Review Commission in an attempt to overturn the verdicts.
Howe remains a supporter of Letby, expressing guilt that she is living a life Letby should also be living. 'We should both be having families and we both bought our houses and we were looking forward to the next chapter of our lives,' she said. Cheshire Police declined to comment on the matter.
