Jane Fallon provided a health update on Thursday following her breast cancer diagnosis, sharing positive news after her second surgery. The 65-year-old author, who has been in a relationship with comedian Ricky Gervais for over 40 years, revealed in March that she had been diagnosed after a routine mammogram. Since then, she has been keeping her followers informed about her progress.
Positive Surgical Outcome
Earlier this month, Fallon gave an encouraging update, announcing that after her first surgery to remove the tumour and a margin of healthy tissue, surgeons had 'basically got it all.' This week, she shared further good news on Instagram: 'Little update. So, my 2nd surgery went well. They got the clear margin they need on the original excision, which is great.'
However, she noted that doctors discovered 'a new little patch of precancerous cells on the other side of the new bit they took out.' Fortunately, medical consensus is that more surgery would be unnecessary, as 'a huge % of pre cancer doesn't develop into cancer.'
Treatment Decisions
Fallon also met with her oncologist, explaining: 'We've agreed the risks of radiation outweigh the benefits in my case. Which leaves Tamoxifen (or similar) or wait and see (my preferred option).' She expressed nervousness about medication due to potential side effects but emphasised there is no pressure to decide quickly. 'All good & I'm just looking forward to getting back to normal,' she added.
Addressing Fake Obituary
The update comes days after Fallon spoke out against a 'disgusting' fake obituary circulating online. She took to X to clarify that AI-generated images showing her in hospital with tubes are '100% fake.' Supportive messages flooded in, with one follower noting the obituary originated from a page posing as a Ricky Gervais fan site, calling it 'beyond vile.'
Background and Career
Fallon began her career in television before publishing her bestselling debut novel, Getting Rid Of Matthew, in 2007. She has since released 14 books, including acclaimed titles like Worst. Idea. Ever, Faking Friends, Just Got Real, and Queen Bee. Born in Harrow, she met Gervais in 1982 while both studied at University College London. They moved in together in 1984 and now reside in Hampstead, west London, with their pets.
Initial Diagnosis
Last month, Fallon shared her diagnosis on Instagram, explaining she had been 'a bit quiet on here lately.' She wrote: 'About a month ago I was diagnosed with breast cancer – very early stage thankfully & the prognosis is excellent.' She described how a routine mammogram before Christmas led to further tests and a biopsy. Despite the challenges, she expressed gratitude for excellent care and a positive outlook.
