Former GMTV star Fiona Phillips, 62, is facing one of life's cruelest challenges - early-onset Alzheimer's disease. Her husband Martin Frizell, editor of ITV's This Morning, has opened up about their heartbreaking journey since her diagnosis 18 months ago.
A Devastating Diagnosis
The couple received the shocking news that Fiona had developed Alzheimer's at just 61 years old. "It's wretched," Martin told The Mirror, describing how the disease has gradually stolen aspects of the vibrant television personality he married in 1997.
The Daily Struggles
Martin revealed how Fiona now sometimes forgets they've had conversations or gets confused about everyday activities. "There are days when she's not herself," he admitted, though noting she still has many good moments.
Calling for More Research
The family is supporting Alzheimer's Research UK, with Martin emphasizing: "We need to put more money into research." He highlighted how dementia remains one of medicine's greatest unsolved challenges.
A Family Affair
Fiona's condition has deeply affected their two sons, Nathaniel and Mackenzie. Martin praised their resilience while acknowledging how difficult it is seeing their mother change.
The former GMTV presenter, who fronted the show for 12 years, had previously spoken about her family history with Alzheimer's. Her parents and grandparents all suffered from the disease.
