Vet Issues Caution Over Cockapoo Ownership

Dr Suzanne Moyes, a veterinarian partnering with Green Pantry, has raised concerns about the Cockapoo breed, one of Britain's most beloved dogs. She warns that potential owners may underestimate the care and health challenges associated with these dogs.

Health Risks: Obesity and Hip Dysplasia

Dr Moyes identified obesity as a significant health issue for Cockapoos. She stated: "This is easily remedied with a healthy and balanced diet and ensuring everybody is aligned on what the dog should and should not be fed. As tempting as it can be to slip your pet some food from your plate, this is one of the leading causes of obesity in dogs, and it can, in turn, lead to other health issues such as joint issues and diabetes."

Another common concern is hip dysplasia, a hereditary condition where the hip joint develops improperly, causing instability and pain. Dr Moyes noted: "Hip dysplasia is an issue that can be exacerbated by obesity. While you can't always prevent joint problems such as hip dysplasia, there is much you can do to help. For example, try to ensure they get regular exercise, and you could consider complementary therapeutic regimes such as hydrotherapy or laser therapy."

Popularity and Lifespan

Cockapoos have surged in popularity in recent years due to their affectionate nature and adorable looks. According to Waggel, their lifespan ranges from 12 to 15 years, influenced by genetics, general wellbeing, and diet. Dr Moyes emphasized that while health issues are possible, they are not inevitable, and with proper care, Cockapoos can lead happy, healthy lives.
