Vets have issued an urgent warning to dog owners about a popular meat product that could be placing pets in genuine danger. While many owners believe offering a portion of their meal to their dog is a harmless treat, experts caution that one food contains ingredients that are not only unhealthy but potentially toxic to dogs.
Why Sausages Are Dangerous for Dogs
Pet MD experts state that most kinds of sausage are not safe for dogs to eat and should not be offered as a treat. This includes breakfast sausage, Vienna sausage, and all forms such as links, patties, and crumbles. Sausage typically contains minced meat, additional fat, and a blend of seasonings like garlic, which is toxic to dogs, alongside other additives that are not pet-safe.
Compared to plain meats like chicken or minced beef, sausage has significantly more fat and sodium, making it unsuitable for a dog's nutrition. Too much of either can lead to serious health conditions such as pancreatitis. Even worse, sausage often contains garlic, onion, or other spicy additives that should always be avoided. These can make dogs very sick and should never be shared with them.
What to Do If Your Dog Eats Sausage
While a modest amount of plain sausage is unlikely to cause real harm, there are better ways to boost protein in a dog's diet. If your dog has eaten a large quantity of sausage and appears unwell, Pet MD recommends contacting your vet without delay.
Other Hazardous Foods for Dogs
Animal charity Blue Cross warns that grapes, raisins, and currants are toxic to dogs, putting them at risk of kidney failure even in small amounts. The exact cause of toxicity is unknown, but some dogs are more sensitive than others. Symptoms of poisoning usually appear within 24 hours.
Additionally, owners should keep chocolate, onions, avocado, and macadamia nuts out of reach. It is also important to prevent dogs from drinking caffeinated beverages such as coffee or tea.
