Novelist Jane Fallon, the long-term partner of comedian Ricky Gervais, has provided an update on her health following a second breast cancer surgery. The 65-year-old author confirmed that the procedure was successful, achieving the necessary clear margin on the original excision.
Discovery of Precancerous Cells
During the surgery, medical professionals discovered a new small patch of precancerous cells. However, they determined that additional surgery would be unnecessary, noting that a significant percentage of precancerous cells do not develop into cancer. Fallon consulted with an oncologist and ultimately decided against radiation therapy, concluding that the potential risks of the treatment outweighed the benefits in her particular situation.
Weighing Treatment Options
Fallon is now considering her next steps, which include taking Tamoxifen or a similar drug, or adopting a 'wait and see' approach. She expressed nervousness about the potential side effects of medication, stating that she is carefully evaluating her options. The author, who received her breast cancer diagnosis following a routine mammogram, shared her eagerness to 'get back to normal' after the positive outcome of her treatment.
In a candid statement, Fallon emphasized the importance of regular screenings and early detection. She also acknowledged the emotional challenges of navigating treatment decisions and the support she has received from loved ones, including Gervais, who has been by her side throughout the process.
