Heather Mills, the former wife of Sir Paul McCartney, has sustained an injury following a frightening skiing mishap in the Austrian Alps. The incident occurred while the 57-year-old was on a work trip for her brand, No Bloat3am.
A Terrifying Turn on the Slopes
The vegan activist and Paralympic skier was enjoying the slopes in the Hinterglemm region of Austria when the accident happened. On the final run of her trip, Mills experienced a failure of her prosthetic leg brace, leading to a crash.
Despite the scare, Mills maintained a positive outlook. She shared a photo on Instagram from the aftermath, smiling on crutches while wearing a bright orange ski suit. In the caption, she addressed her followers: "I hope everyone's New Year has got off to a great start. I was lucky to just break my prosthetic leg brace on the last ski run on the last day, bit swollen, but nothing broken."
Details of the Incident and Recovery
A spokesperson for Mills provided further details to the Mail, explaining the sequence of events. "On the very last day of the last run, the slope was empty so Heather decided to gain some speed, which was a little bit too much for her leg brace," they said.
The force caused the screws in the brace to release, resulting in the accident. Fortunately, Mills did not break any bones, but her residual limb was left swollen. Medical advice has stipulated that she must use crutches for five days until the swelling subsides.
The spokesperson confirmed that the prosthetic leg itself was not damaged, but the brace requires repair at a specialist clinic. "Luckily, the leg itself did not break so it’s just a couple of hours to get it fixed," they added, noting that the high-speed forces of skiing can eventually work the screws loose over time.
Life Beyond the Accident
Mills, who lost her left leg below the knee in a 1993 traffic accident in London, is a decorated adaptive athlete. She competed for the British Disabled Ski Team between 2010 and 2013, securing multiple World Cup medals.
The businesswoman recently spent the Christmas period with her partner, 39-year-old film producer and actor Mike Dickman. The couple, who first met on a train in 2019, enjoyed a festive trip to New York last month.
In a past television appearance on ITV's Lorraine, Mills has even cited her meet-cute as a reason to avoid dating apps, advising singletons to "get off the apps" and engage with people in real-world settings.
