A British grandmother with terminal cancer is stranded in Spain after suffering a brain hemorrhage while on a family holiday in Benidorm. Mally Stubbings, 50, from Boston, Lincolnshire, was admitted to intensive care on June 9 after a CT scan revealed a small bleed on her brain. Although she has been moved to a regular ward, doctors have told her family she cannot fly due to air pressure risks, and no discharge date has been given.
Family Holiday Turns into Nightmare
Mally was enjoying a family vacation with her three children, two grandchildren, son-in-law, brother, and sister-in-law. She has stage three terminal lung cancer and had completed two years of treatment on May 8. Her sister-in-law, Natalie Hancock, said the family wanted to create lasting memories but now only have bad ones.
Mally initially fell ill with a stomach infection and was hospitalized on June 8 but discharged the next day. On June 10, she lost the use of her legs and suffered vacant seizures, prompting a rush to A&E. An ICU doctor diagnosed a small brain bleed, and she spent a day in ICU before being moved to a ward.
Family Left in Limbo
Mally's partner Carl, daughter Gypsy, and two grandchildren have stayed in Benidorm, forced to vacate their hotel and rent an Airbnb for £1,000 per week. Natalie set up a GoFundMe page to help with costs. The family explored private transport to bring Mally home but were quoted over £30,000, which is unaffordable after saving hard for the holiday.
Natalie said: "We have no clue how long she's going to be out there. It's absolutely insane, no normal person has that type of money." The family also struggles with a language barrier at the hospital, relying on Google Translate when a translator is unavailable.
