Expert: Cool bedrooms in 20 mins with fan, ice and tray

As the UK endures another heatwave, a sleep specialist has shared a simple technique that can cool a bedroom in about 20 minutes using just a fan, a tray and ice cubes.

DIY air conditioning trick

Dr Nerina Ramlakhan, a sleep specialist and neurophysiologist at Oak Tree Mobility, recommends placing a tray of ice in front of a fan. "The fan should be positioned so that it's blowing over the tray, and as the ice melts in front of it, the room cools down," she said. "Do it for 20 minutes or so before going to bed to help cool your bedroom down."

The technique comes as the UK experiences its fifth heatwave of the year, with hot, dry and settled conditions across much of England and Wales. The Met Office says temperatures will rise quickly, with many areas reaching 35°C and highs of 36-37°C possible, especially across the Midlands, east and southeast. An Amber Extreme Heat Warning is in force, with potential impacts on health, transport and infrastructure.

Other cooling tips

Dr Ramlakhan also advises opening windows when it is cooler outside than in, and pointing a fan outwards to push hot air out. For those with multi-floor homes, she suggests sleeping downstairs, as heat rises.

She recommends closing windows and keeping curtains and blinds shut during the day to block out the sun, and opening them at night when the air is cooler. She also suggests avoiding oven-based meals and switching bedding to breathable natural fibres like cotton or linen.

The British Red Cross emphasises the importance of sleep in a heatwave, stating that quality sleep helps the body recover, regulate temperature and maintain physical and mental health. Adequate rest is especially important for vulnerable groups as it supports immune function, energy levels and cardiovascular health.
