Xabi Alonso gives Emi Martinez update after Chelsea star rushed to hospital

Chelsea boss Xabi Alonso says his goalkeeper Emi Martinez was conscious when he was taken to hospital after suffering a sickening injury at Everton.

Argentina World Cup winner Martinez collided with Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite in the second half of Saturday afternoon's clash at Hill Dickinson Stadium, which Chelsea won 2-0 thanks to two goals from Pedro Neto.

Martinez replaced by Mike Penders

Martinez was tended to by medics for around 10 minutes before being taken off on a stretcher and replaced by 21-year-old Belgian Mike Penders for his Premier League debut. Branthwaite was checked over but was able to continue.

Speaking to TNT Sports after the match, former Liverpool midfielder Alonso said: "As far as I know, he left the stadium conscious.

"Right now he is in hospital doing precautionary tests. Let's see. That's all I know so far."

Support from players and fans

Martinez's injury led to Jordan Pickford coming the length of the field to check on his fellow No.1, while the former Aston Villa stopper was applauded by home supporters as he left the pitch.

Matchwinner Neto, who scored his goals at the beginning and end of the second half, dedicated Chelsea's win to Martinez.

The Portuguese international said: "We are really pleased. Shame for Emi [Martinez] but we wish you all the best. This win is for him."

Reaction to the collision

Speaking at the time of the incident between Martinez and Branthwaite, TNT Sports co-commentator Owen Hargreaves said: "That was almost like an NFL collision because they were so committed and so vulnerable.

"A clash of heads and there's no protection at all, no helmets. I just hope he's OK."
