Week in wildlife: deer, jackals and an oily-kneed beetle

This week's wildlife photography roundup captures an autumnal deer in Oregon, a group of Sri Lankan golden jackals, and the short-necked oil beetle, rediscovered in Wales after nearly 60 years and very nearly believed extinct.

Rediscovered Beetle and Seasonal Scenes

The short-necked oil beetle has the endearing habit of secreting an oily yellow-orange substance from its knee joints when alarmed. Elsewhere, a Columbian black-tailed doe keeps watch for a nearby buck while standing in a pasture in Oregon, US, and deer walk in the morning mist at Bushy Park in London.

Birds and Marine Life

A scarlet ibis, the national bird of Trinidad and Tobago, flies over the Godineau swamp in southern Trinidad, though poaching, pollution and coastal wetland loss are threatening populations. Dolphins playfully leap about off the Sunderland coast, UK, and a great egret spears a fish it caught at the Arthur R Marshall Loxahatchee national wildlife refuge in Boynton Beach, Florida.

Rescue and Rehabilitation

This young female eastern imperial eagle has been fitted with a prosthetic leg developed using 3D printing technology. She was found with a badly broken leg in 2025 and has been cared for by vets at Anima, a rescue centre in Athens, Greece. She will never go back to the wild, since her prosthetic lacks talons that can close on prey, but she may enter a captive breeding programme.

Urban and Wild Encounters

A baby macaque peers out from its safe spot on its mother in Tangjiahe national nature reserve, central China, while a northern palm squirrel eats a piece of bread on a rooftop in Karachi, Pakistan. A robin perches in a tree in a city park in Bursa, Turkey, as colder weather approaches and robins move down from the mountains to urban areas.

An iguana catches a good view of the golf near the third green during the VidantaWorld Mexico Open 2026 in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. Eurasian spoonbills forage for food in a pond at Cheonsu bay in Seosan, South Korea, and a common Indian tree frog looks for food in a garden in Assam, India. A tired wood pigeon yawns after resting in a garden in Ilkley, UK, and a tiny jumping spider waits patiently for prey on a rose petal in a suburban garden in Placentia, California.
