Walker's miracle escape after 100ft plunge in Glencoe gorge

A walker has had a remarkable escape after tumbling around 100ft down steep rocky ground in Glencoe and coming to a stop on the edge of a vertical drop into a river.

Rescue at the Lost Valley

Glencoe Mountain Rescue Team was called out by Police Scotland following reports that a walker had fallen into a gorge in the Coire Gabhail area, better known as the Lost Valley.

The casualty had fallen down the rocky slope before being stopped by a small tree just inches from the edge of a huge drop into the river below. Rescuers made their way to the scene along with the Coastguard.

Rope system used to reach casualty

Glencoe MRT said: "Team members quickly arrived on scene, set up a simple rope system and two went down to assess the casualty. Following a medical assessment, it was decided that the helicopter was no longer required. The casualty was brought back up using the rope system."

The team added: "The casualty had tumbled down about 30 metres over steep rocky ground and was stopped right on the edge of a big vertical drop into the river below by a small tree."

Minor injuries despite 100ft fall

Despite the 30-metre fall, the casualty was lucky to have sustained only minor injuries and was able to walk out with some assistance from the team. Glencoe MRT said: "We wish the casualty a speedy recovery."
