Shark Attack Kills Surfer at Sydney's Long Reef Beach

A 57-year-old surfer has died after being attacked by what is believed to be a great white shark at Long Reef Beach on Sydney's northern beaches. The victim, Mercury Psillakis, a father of one and experienced surfer, was in the water with friends for about half an hour on Saturday morning when he was suddenly dragged under.

Witnesses reported that Psillakis was sitting on his board about 100 metres from shore when the shark struck. Fellow surfers rushed to pull him to the beach, but he had sustained catastrophic injuries, including the loss of both legs, and could not be resuscitated. New South Wales police described the incident as a 'freak occurrence'.

The attack has deeply affected the local surfing community, which is known for its tight-knit nature. Friends and family gathered on the sand to console each other as emergency services, including police boats, jetskis, drones, and a helicopter, searched for the shark. Two sections of Psillakis's surfboard were recovered and will be examined to confirm the shark species.

This is the first fatal shark attack in Sydney since 2022, when British diving instructor Simon Nellist was killed by a great white at Little Bay. Despite increased awareness and monitoring, experts note that Australia is following a global trend of rising shark attack numbers. Local surfers expressed shock but acknowledged the inherent risks of their passion.
