A rare white buffalo calf has been born in South Dakota, sparking awe and reverence among the Lakota Sioux, who view the event as a sacred sign tied to ancient prophecies.
The birth, which occurred in the wild, is considered an omen of hope and renewal in Lakota tradition. Tribal leaders say the white buffalo calf symbolises purity and unity, echoing the legend of the White Buffalo Calf Woman, a spiritual figure central to their culture.
"This is a blessing," said Chief Arvol Looking Horse, a spiritual leader of the Lakota. "The white buffalo calf brings a message of healing and reminds us to care for the Earth and each other."
Biologists estimate the odds of a white buffalo birth at 1 in 10 million, making the event extraordinarily rare. Unlike albino animals, white buffalo calves result from a genetic combination that produces their distinctive colouration.
The calf has drawn visitors and media attention, with many seeing it as a hopeful symbol amid global challenges. Conservationists are monitoring the animal to ensure its safety in the wild.
For the Lakota, the birth is more than a biological anomaly—it’s a spiritual milestone. Tribal ceremonies are being planned to honour the calf and its significance.
