A giant rat measuring 22 inches (56cm) from nose to tail has been discovered in a home in Normanby, Teesside, sparking concerns over cuts to council pest control services. The rodent, described as being the size of a cat, was removed by a private pest controller.
Conservative councillor Stephen Martin, whose Eston ward neighbours Normanby, said the find was not an isolated incident. 'Rats are being spotted more and more around our area. It has been getting worse for a few years now,' he said. Martin blamed the problem on Redcar and Cleveland Council's decision to stop offering pest control to private residents, leaving many unable to afford private services.
Councillor David Taylor added that recent housing developments had displaced rats from fields into urban areas, while fly-tipping and takeaway food waste created a 'perfect storm'. He warned: 'The rats obviously lived in the sewers but they're now walking the streets.'
The council confirmed it no longer provides a wider pest control service but offers advice online. A spokesperson said: 'The council has a dedicated pest control officer who manages pest issues on council-owned land. We continue to work with partners to address complex issues.'
Both councillors are calling for a full vermin survey and treatment plan across the borough, warning the problem will worsen without action.
