GB News presenters Anne Diamond and Stephen Dixon paused their live coverage during Sunday's breakfast show to address a tragic incident at Yorkshire Wildlife Park. An unnamed individual was left mortally wounded after entering the tiger enclosure on Saturday and was later pronounced dead at the scene.
Expert reaction to the incident
The television hosts spoke to Danny Bamping from the British Big Cats Society about the man killed by a tiger after reportedly climbing into its enclosure. Bamping commented: "It's a very sad situation all round obviously. The cat's not done anything wrong at all but this man has been able to get into the enclosure which is rather frightening in itself, really."
He continued: "There should be enough security there for the cat to be safe and people walking around the wildlife park to be safe. If this young lad has got in there, the security measures will need to be looked at."
Questions over security measures
Stephen Dixon questioned reports around the man being "determined to get into the enclosure" which ultimately led to tragedy. "That's it," Danny replied. "That's the fine line. That's the problem. This young lad decided to get in there. I don't think anybody could have stopped him."
Zoo confirms tiger will not be euthanised
In a fresh update, the tiger that fatally mauled the man will not be euthanised, the zoo revealed in a statement. "We would like to thank everyone who has expressed their concern following yesterday's tragic incident," Yorkshire Wildlife Park said in a statement posted to X.
"Our thoughts and heartfelt sympathies remain with the family and loved ones of the man who sadly lost his life. The park will be closed today while the staff team who were deeply affected by events receive specialist support. Many, many people have contacted us about Altai, the tiger. We can reassure everyone that he is safe and well and will not be euthanised as a result of this incident."
South Yorkshire Police said they received reports of a man entering the tiger enclosure at approximately 1.35pm on Saturday. They confirmed enquiries into the circumstances surrounding the incident were continuing, and the man's identity had not yet been publicly released. In a statement, the force said: "The man's family is aware and is being supported by specialist officers. Our thoughts are with them at this distressing time."
