Dog Food Recall: 'Stop Feeding' Warning Over Metal

Pet owners are being urged to check the food their dogs have eaten in the last few weeks and contact a vet if they appear to be unwell. More than 5,000 cases of dog food have been recalled due to suspected metal contamination.

Recall Details and Affected Products

Producers of the dog food said on Friday (August 21) that pet owners should check if they have served the affected food to their dogs and take them to the vet if they appear to be unwell.

Wisconsin's Fromm Family Foods, which sells dog food across the US and Canada, confirmed metal contamination is suspected in two of its products. The affected items are:

  • 3,852 cases of Fromm Turkey Pâté Wet Dog Food (12.2 oz) with lot code EP2A3306 551006 and a 'Best By' 032029 date
  • 1,973 cases of Fromm Diner Classics Milo's Meatloaf Pâté Wet Dog Food (12.5 oz) with a lot code of EP2A3306 551029 and a 'Best By' 032029 date

Symptoms and Health Risks

If a dog has consumed the affected food, they could display a range of symptoms if the pâté makes them unwell, Fromm said in a product recall notice issued by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

“Dogs ingesting metal may exhibit symptoms such as choking, vomiting, loss of appetite, lethargy, or stomach discomfort,” the notice said. “Metal of any size, especially sharp pieces, can lead to serious health issues in dogs, including lacerations in the mouth and gastrointestinal tract. Metal, when consumed in large amounts, can lead to gastrointestinal upset, partial blockage, and a risk of intestinal obstruction.”

Consumer Guidance and Company Response

The update published on the FDA website added: “Consumers whose dogs have consumed any of the affected products and are exhibiting these symptoms should contact their veterinarian. Consumers should stop feeding the product listed below to their dogs.”

However, no injury or illness reports have been made in relation to the food at this stage. Fromm issued the recall after customers complained, they added.

Fromm continued: “The recall was initiated after receiving complaints of metal contamination. We have identified the error, and in addition to our existing safety processes, we have put corrective actions in place to prevent this from happening again.”

Affected customers should contact their retailer. They can also contact Fromm on 1-800-325-6331 or info@frommfamily.com.
