Britain's Most Dangerous Spider Invades Homes: Experts Issue Urgent Warning Over Painful Bites
Dangerous False Widow Spider Invades UK Homes

Experts have issued an urgent warning as Britain's most dangerous spider, the false widow, invades homes across the country. The venomous arachnid, known for its painful and sometimes severe bites, is becoming increasingly common in the UK.

Why the False Widow Is a Growing Concern

The false widow spider, scientifically named Steatoda nobilis, is often mistaken for the deadly black widow. While its bite is not usually fatal, it can cause extreme pain, swelling, and even nausea or fever in some cases.

Recent reports indicate a sharp rise in sightings, particularly in southern England, as warmer weather drives the spiders indoors in search of shelter and prey.

How to Identify a False Widow

  • Appearance: Shiny, dark brown or black with cream markings.
  • Size: Up to 14mm in body length, with legs spanning over 30mm.
  • Web: Messy, tangled webs often found in sheds, garages, and window frames.

What to Do If Bitten

  1. Clean the wound: Wash with soap and water to reduce infection risk.
  2. Apply ice: Helps reduce swelling and pain.
  3. Monitor symptoms: Seek medical attention if severe reactions occur.

Wildlife experts advise sealing cracks in walls and keeping homes clutter-free to deter these unwelcome guests. If you spot one, avoid handling it—use a glass and paper to safely relocate it outdoors.
