A chemical engineer has revealed how a simple kitchen staple can tackle stubborn water stains on shower glass. Diego Fernandez, a cleaning specialist, says the secret lies in a solution of hot water and liquid dish soap, costing as little as 57p per bottle at Morrisons.
Fernandez explains that shower stains consist of two types of dirt: inorganic limescale from calcium and magnesium deposits, and organic residue from soap, shampoo, and body oils forming a greasy compound called stearate. Most commercial cleaners fail because they only address one of these issues.
To remove stains completely, Fernandez recommends a two-step approach. First, mix one teaspoon of liquid dish soap in 500ml of hot water in a spray bottle, spray on the glass, and scrub with a sponge to remove the greasy film. Then, apply a mild acid like white vinegar or citric acid to dissolve the limescale.
Finally, wipe the glass with a microfiber cloth to prevent new marks and leave it crystal clear. This method combines a surfactant to cut grease and an acid to dissolve minerals, achieving a sparkling finish without harsh scrubbing or expensive products.
