A heavy band of rain is set to roll slowly across Liverpool before thunderstorms arrive later in the week. Merseyside is braced for a 15-hour downpour as a wet week arrives.
Timing of the Rain
According to Met Office weather maps, persistent rain is expected to start in Liverpool around 6:45 PM on Sunday, June 7. The rain will continue solidly until shortly before 10 AM on Monday. The downpour is expected to become heavier around 11:30 PM, with the heaviest band moving over the city between 3:15 AM and 4:15 AM. Maps show red and orange sections of rainfall over much of Merseyside, denoting rainfall of between 16mm and 32mm per hour.
Week Ahead
It will be a wet commute for many on Monday morning, with rainfall subsiding by 10 AM. BBC Weather forecasters predict a mainly wet week for Liverpool, with showers and rain expected between Tuesday and Wednesday. Thundery showers are expected on Wednesday morning, with thunder and lightning between 7 AM and 1 PM, and up to a 90% chance of rain. The next bright and dry day is expected to be Saturday, June 13, with sunny spells and highs of 19°C.
National Impact
The huge band of rain will cover much of the country on Sunday night into Monday morning. The Met Office warns that rain is forecast to move southeastwards across the country, turning heavy in the north and west, accompanied by gusty winds. Showers will also affect Scotland and Northern Ireland. At 7:30 AM Monday, South Wales, Somerset, and the West Midlands will bear the brunt of the worst conditions. Almost all of South-West England, the East of England, and North-West England will be engulfed in rainfall. Across Scotland, conditions are comparatively calmer with only patchy rain anticipated.
Weather maps indicate that by 3 PM, the bulk of the heavy rainfall will have swept across Britain, though persistent showers are set to linger across the East of England.
Met Office Statement
Met Office Chief Meteorologist Chris Bulmer said: 'Over the next few days we'll continue to see a fairly changeable picture, with a mix of sunshine and showers for many. Into the weekend, a more organised area of rain and stronger winds will move across the UK, although this system is likely to weaken as it does so. While some heavier rain and gusty conditions are possible at times, the overall picture remains one of changeable weather, with further spells of rain or showers interspersed with some drier and brighter periods.'
