In a stunning comeback that will delight EastEnders fans, iconic actor Shaun Williamson is preparing to return to Albert Square this December after more than two decades away from the BBC soap.
Legendary Character Makes Emotional Return
The 60-year-old actor, who originally portrayed Barry Evans from 1994 until 2004, will reprise his famous role for a special episode focusing on Nigel Bates's ongoing dementia storyline. Williamson's return marks exactly 21 years since his character's dramatic exit from Walford.
Speaking exclusively about his unexpected comeback, Shaun Williamson expressed both excitement and nerves about returning to the iconic set. "It was a complete shock getting the call to go back to Albert Square, but so exciting!" he revealed. "I have to admit to a few nerves - loads, actually - when I walked back onto the set of The Queen Victoria, but it was so great to work with old friends and colleagues on such a brilliant episode."
Special Episode Addresses Dementia Storyline
The emotional return forms part of a carefully crafted storyline that has seen Nigel Bates, played by 70-year-old Paul Bradley, reveal his dementia diagnosis earlier this year. EastEnders has been working closely with Dementia UK throughout the development of this sensitive plot, ensuring accurate representation of the condition.
In the upcoming December special, Barry Evans will make his appearance alongside step-mother Pat Butcher in The Queen Vic pub as Nigel's dementia symptoms intensify. Despite their historically fraught relationship in the land of the living, Pat and Barry will put aside their differences to support Nigel during his time of need.
Double Comeback for Iconic Characters
The news comes just days after the announcement that Pam St Clement, 83, will also return as Pat Butcher for the same special episode. Both legendary characters will feature as Nigel's memories and altered reality transport him back to the 1990s, creating a powerful narrative about how dementia affects perception and memory.
Ben Wadey, EastEnders Executive Producer, expressed his delight at welcoming both actors back to the show. "I'm delighted to welcome Shaun Williamson back to EastEnders for Nigel's special episode," he said. "Barry Evans was renowned for being one of Walford's unluckiest residents, most notably for his choice of shoes, and so it was a privilege to welcome him back alongside Pat for these special scenes in The Vic."
Barry Evans remains etched in EastEnders history for his extraordinary bad luck, disastrous love life, and epic feud with step-mother Pat. His character met a dramatic end in 2004 when his wife Janine Butcher pushed him off a cliff during an argument about his inappropriate footwear choices.
This December's special episode promises to deliver both nostalgia and powerful storytelling as EastEnders continues its commitment to tackling important social issues through its compelling narratives.
